Symphonic Dance No. 1 is actually an abridged version of the second movement of my first symphony, and is essentially a waltz with a contrasting middle section. The waltz portion is mostly intact and consists of a 16 bar melody repeated in various permutations, as if by different sets of dancers, and culminating in an interlocking ensemble piece on the central theme. In the middle the mood changes, shifting to 4/4, then back to a more lugubrious 3/4, as if the mind is wandering, dreamlike, away from the ballroom before being brought back into the moment. While the middle section is considerably shortened from the original version, it nonetheless serves as a diversion from the main dance and provides a contrast in orchestration, harmony, and character.
